ASU Labs may be used as a private and public record for cautious, self-directed learning across scientific, technical and behavioural subjects. The work is not presented as clinical practice, professional consultancy, accredited laboratory work or formal academic research unless that status is separately established.

Scope boundary: Independent study means learning, reading, observing, documenting, modelling, reviewing sources and—where lawful and suitably controlled—conducting proportionate practical exploration. It does not create a licence, professional qualification, clinical authority, research-ethics approval or permission to work with regulated materials or people.

Chemistry

Concepts, literature, materials science, analytical thinking and carefully bounded practical work. Higher-risk chemistry is subject to the separate research-safety gate and applicable UK controls.

Psychology

Theories of behaviour, cognition, development, decision-making and social interaction may be studied as literature and theory. This does not authorise diagnosis, treatment, therapy, assessment or individual clinical conclusions.

Phycology

The study of algae and related biological systems may be documented through literature review, observation and appropriately contained work. Biological hazards, sampling permissions and environmental obligations must be assessed where relevant.

Connected disciplines

Engineering, computing, physics, environmental science, policy, systems thinking and other subjects may be included where the methods, evidence and limits are clearly stated.

Psychology and human-participant boundary

ASU Labs does not use the label “psychology research” to imply authority over another person. Work involving people requires a separate ethical and legal assessment before it begins.

No diagnosis or treatment

Do not diagnose a person, prescribe treatment, provide therapy, or present an individualised psychological conclusion as a professional assessment.

Consent and dignity

Where people are involved, participation should be genuinely voluntary, informed and proportionate to the activity. Avoid coercion, deception that creates material risk, unnecessary sensitive questions and avoidable distress.

Data minimisation

Prefer anonymous information. If identifiable or pseudonymous personal data is collected, consider the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, lawful basis, transparency, security, retention and whether a data protection impact assessment is required.

No individual decision-making

Research observations should not be turned into decisions about a particular person's eligibility, health, employment, housing, education or treatment without an appropriate lawful and professional framework.

The ICO notes that research-related processing still requires a lawful basis and appropriate safeguards, and that research participation consent is distinct from UK GDPR consent for processing personal data.

Biology and phycology boundary

Observational or educational work involving algae, plants, microorganisms or environmental samples can introduce biological, ecological, contamination and disposal considerations. Do not assume that a naturally occurring sample is harmless or unrestricted.

Chemistry boundary

Educational intent does not remove chemical law. Before practical work, identify the material, concentration, quantity, hazards, exposure routes, incompatibilities, storage requirements, waste route, premises constraints and any applicable licence or reporting requirement.

Law first
Check the current UK rules and whether the substance or activity is controlled.
Safer alternative
Prefer non-hazardous demonstrations, simulations or established educational materials where they answer the question.
Suitable premises
A domestic address is not automatically a suitable laboratory or authorised workplace.
Competence
Do not perform work beyond your training, equipment, supervision or emergency capability.
Waste
Plan lawful storage, classification and disposal before generating hazardous waste.
Stop if uncertain
Uncertainty about legality, identity, controls or emergency response is a stop condition.

Human-data research

ICO research provisions — use current ICO guidance rather than assuming that the word “research” creates a data-protection exemption.

Dangerous substances

HSE DSEAR — fire, explosion and related dangerous-substance risks require appropriate controls in relevant workplaces.

Controlled chemicals

GOV.UK Home Office guidance — check current controls for explosives precursors and poisons before acquisition, possession or use.

Bottom line: ASU Labs can document curiosity, learning and responsible experimentation. It cannot turn an otherwise restricted activity into a lawful one. If the work crosses into professional services, clinical activity, regulated research, controlled substances, hazardous processes or work requiring specialist facilities, stop and obtain the appropriate approval or professional input first.
