The study of algae and related biological systems may be documented through literature review, observation and appropriately contained work. Biological hazards, sampling permissions and environmental obligations must be assessed where relevant.
Engineering, computing, physics, environmental science, policy, systems thinking and other subjects may be included where the methods, evidence and limits are clearly stated.
ASU Labs does not use the label “psychology research” to imply authority over another person. Work involving people requires a separate ethical and legal assessment before it begins.
Do not diagnose a person, prescribe treatment, provide therapy, or present an individualised psychological conclusion as a professional assessment.
Where people are involved, participation should be genuinely voluntary, informed and proportionate to the activity. Avoid coercion, deception that creates material risk, unnecessary sensitive questions and avoidable distress.
Prefer anonymous information. If identifiable or pseudonymous personal data is collected, consider the UK GDPR, Data Protection Act 2018, lawful basis, transparency, security, retention and whether a data protection impact assessment is required.
Research observations should not be turned into decisions about a particular person's eligibility, health, employment, housing, education or treatment without an appropriate lawful and professional framework.
The ICO notes that research-related processing still requires a lawful basis and appropriate safeguards, and that research participation consent is distinct from UK GDPR consent for processing personal data.
Observational or educational work involving algae, plants, microorganisms or environmental samples can introduce biological, ecological, contamination and disposal considerations. Do not assume that a naturally occurring sample is harmless or unrestricted.
Educational intent does not remove chemical law. Before practical work, identify the material, concentration, quantity, hazards, exposure routes, incompatibilities, storage requirements, waste route, premises constraints and any applicable licence or reporting requirement.
ICO research provisions — use current ICO guidance rather than assuming that the word “research” creates a data-protection exemption.
HSE COSHH risk assessment — hazardous-substance risks must be assessed and controlled where COSHH applies.
HSE DSEAR — fire, explosion and related dangerous-substance risks require appropriate controls in relevant workplaces.
